Tuas South[]

Tuas South is an industrial area in the south-westernmost region of Singapore.

It is an entirely reclaimed land south-west off Tuas Crescent and Tuas South Avenue 5.

It is home to some of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies like GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer. The Tuas Marine Transfer Station located on the western shores will transport the island's incinerated wastes to Pulau Semakau for landfills.

Furthermore, the world's largest tunnel for storage of oil is being built in the south of extension.

Two of the four incinerators in Singapore are also located in Tuas South.

Currently land reclamation is being carried out in the Southern side of Tuas South in which it will stretch near to the sea border with Indonesia and it will be the southernmost point of Singapore mainland.

Tuas mega port will be completed by 2040 to house all of PSA current assets and operations, PSA will give up its city terminals by 2027 and Pasir Panjang Terminal by 2040. Tanjong Pagar terminal had ceased operations in October 2017 marking the beginning of the end of an era of port operation in the area which dates back to the modern founding of Singapore in 1819.

Services 182, 247 and 248 passes along Tuas View.

Etymology[]

Tuas is derived from a daytime fishing method uncommon these days. The coastal Malays floated coconut fronds and leafy branches kept close together by the rising tide. A large net was then spread and suspended below. The shade provided drew in the fish. More and more were attracted until, at a given signal, the net was hauled up by the Malay fishermen in the boats. Levering or hauling up is menuas, which became tuas. Tuas also means "to chop in two pieces", "to raise by leverage", and "to support".

History[]

The Tuas area in the early nineteenth century was referred to by three place names: Tg Kampong, Tg Rawa and Tg Gull — references made in Franklin and Jackson's 1830 map of Singapore.

Tuas used to be swamp land which was later cleared for squatter settlement. It became a fishing village. In the old days, it was not unusual to see about 200 fishing boats in Tuas every morning.

In the 1970s, the residents in Tuas were resettled in public housing estates. Tuas was then developed for industrial use. In the 1980s, land was reclaimed around Tuas for more industrial development. By 1988, about 6.5 km² of land off Tuas were reclaimed. Land reclamation off Tuas is still ongoing; the land area of Tuas will increase from 17.02 km² in 1996 to the projected 20.75 km² by 2010 [1]. PentaOcean Construction (五洋建設)is most heavily involved in the land reclamation. The peninsular reclaimed in the late 1980s to early 1990s is named Tuas South, while the land currently being reclaimed to the southeast of Tuas Jetty is known as the Tuas South Extension.

Industry[]

Being far away from the main residential areas and the commercial district of Singapore, Tuas was chosen as a site for industrial development as the adjacent industrial areas in Jurong were being built. Heavy industries can be found in Tuas, although not as much as on Jurong Island. Two of Singapore's four incinerators are also found in Tuas, namely Tuas Incinerator and Tuas South Incinerator. A world-scale renewable diesel plant, using palm oil as feedstock, is due to be completed in 2010. Its capacity will make it the largest plant of its kind (800,000 tons per annum).

Further reclamation into the Tuas South extension is done to house the world largest storage of oil.

Tuas Megaport will be completed by 2040 in the reclaimed land to house all the PSA's current assets and operations. PSA had already withdrawn Tanjong Pagar Terminal and Marina South Terminal by 2000 and is in the process of gradually withdrawing Brani and Pasir Panjang Terminals.

Residential areas[]

Tuas has a number of residential buildings provided at low cost for the people who work there. Some are located at Benoi Sector, which also has an eating place, whilst the others are located at Pioneer Road.

The low rise flats are normally named from Blocks A to H, and are usually 9 to 11 stories high. They are not elegant, being built to meet basic residential requirements; they provide shelter with an electricity and water supply.

Shopping Malls[]

Tuas Plaza is a new shopping mall, owned by CapitaMalls Asia and construction is set to complete by 2016. Tenants are Uniqlo, Daiso, H&M, Food Republic, River Island, Mango, Kopitiam, MyRepublic, M1, SingTel, StarHub and TPG Telecom.

This terminal is expected to be moved to a new site at the junction of Tuas West Drive and Tuas Link 4, nearer to Tuas Plaza MRT Station, and host another 2 more services.

Land Acquisition[]

On 7 January 2017, the government has decided to make the second acquisition of Raffles Country Club as the site offers the "most suitable location" to run the HSR tracks after the bridge crossing and to place the tunnel portal leading to the underground tunnels that would take the HSR to the Jurong East terminus. The site has to be vacated by July 31, 2018, to be used for HSR crossover tracks and a siding facility to temporarily house a train near the border for safety or operational reasons. The site may also be used for the Tuas Polytechnic.

Motorcross @ Tuas[]

Motorcross @ Tuas was a circuit and entertainment centre, which is being drawn up for a $40 million to $50 million motorsports circuit-cum-entertainment centre in Tuas. The development, spearheaded by Singapore Agro Agriculture, which is behind food-and-retail hub Turf City and kampung-style farm produce centre Farmart in Tengah, is slated to straddle two plots of land between the Asia Pacific Breweries plant and Raffles Marina. If built, it will boast a 540,000 sq m facility with a 5km race course.

While that would be long enough for Formula One races sanctioned by world racing body Federation Internationale de l'Automobile, it is unlikely to be another F1 venue. Instead, it will be vying to host regional racing events, such as Formula BMW Asia and Porsche's Carrera Cup Asia.

A Singapore Land Authority spokesman said it had been approached by an undisclosed party, and that talks are still 'pretty exploratory'.

Industrial space landlord JTC Corp said it is 'evaluating proposals, together with other government agencies like the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), Singapore Tourism Board and the Singapore Sports Council'.

It was JTC which invited proposals for the site in October 2003 as part of its vision to develop the Tuas area as a complement to Jurong Industrial Estate. Singapore Agro Agriculture declined to talk about the project.

A source close to the plan said the planned development would create up to 1,000 new jobs, and give tourists another reason to visit Singapore. The land was leased until 26 November 2011, and was permanently closed down to make way for the new Tuas West Depot. It was being shifted to Changi East.

To be financially viable, the development has to have a plot ratio big enough to house a host of other tenants - from restaurants to retail outlets, from car dealerships to tyre shops.

'It might also have R&D facilities for manufacturers, and a petrol station,' claimed another party in the know.

The Singapore Motor Sports Association has been lobbying for such a circuit - where public roads are closed for racing - in Marina South.

Tuas Polytechnic[]

Tuas Polytechnic will be a new polytechnic built at the former site of the Raffles Country Club. Construction will start in 2014 and complete in 2018, it will be a sixth polytechnic in Singapore. It will be accessible by bus service 182 from Joo Koon Bus Interchange, and is accessible through direct walking from Gul Circle MRT Station.
