Stadium MRT Station
Stadium MRT Station is an underground Mass Rapid Transit station on the Circle Line in Singapore. The station was opened on 17 April 2010 along with the rest of Stage 1 & 2 of the Circle Line in Singapore.
It serves the Kallang area and the future Singapore Sports Hub (which comprises the new National Stadium, new Aquatic Centre and the existing Singapore Indoor Stadium), Leisure Park Kallang and the Tanjong Rhu area. The station is named after the sport centres/stadiums in the vicinity. It is expected to have a high amount of passenger usage when there is a significant event in the Sport centres nearby. The station was designed by WOHA Architects which they was awarded with Design Of The Year of the President's Design Award 2010 for the station's design.[1] This station is also within the vicinity of Kallang and Mountbatten.
Since the opening of the Circle Line extension on 14 January 2012, trains from Marina Bay terminate at Platform 1 of this station during off-peak hours, proceed to perform a cross-over after the station and arrive at Platform 2 to return to Marina Bay.
History[]
Before the station was constructed, the closest MRT stations were Kallang and City Hall stations to National Stadium, which were considerable distance. Additionally, road access to the National Stadium was hampered by traffic jams during major events at the venue. When the stations of the Marina Line were revealed, the line was announced to serve National Stadium as the line goes through Stadium Boulevard.
The station then became part of Circle line (CCL) Stage 1 when the MRL was incorporated into the CCL in 2001. Contract 824 for the construction of Boulevard station and associated tunnels was awarded to a joint venture between Nishimatsu Construction Co Ltd and Lum Chang Building Contractors Pte Ltd at S$270 million (US$150.69 million).
On 6 February 2002, traffic around the former National Stadium had to be realigned for the construction of the station. To facilitate the construction of the station, Stadium Boulevard was closed from Stadium Drive to Stadium Walk. Along with the other stations on Stages 1 and 2, the station started operations on 17 April 2010.
Concourse[]
The station concourses are located at street level, situated at both ends of the station. To accommodate surge crowds from the Singapore Indoor Stadium, Kallang Theatre and the National Stadium, the station has been designed with an at-grade, open-air concourse and entrance plaza. The open-air concourse prevents crushing and panic situations that could occur with crowds squeezing into confined, below-ground spaces. The ground-level entrance plaza also creates opportunities for the surrounding developments, currently inward-looking, to create and enhance external, ground-level activities.
Faregates for automatic fare collection and provides access between paid and unpaid areas of the station, with at least one bidirectional wide-swinging gate for the benefit of passengers-in-wheelchairs and those carrying bulky items or travelling with prams.
General Ticketing Machines allow commuters to purchase tickets for single or multiple journeys, and along with Top-up Machines, offer contactless card transactions. The station office at the West exit functions as a Passenger Service Centre, and is staffed during operating hours, where commuters may make travel inquiries or perform card transactions using cash payment. At the East exit, the station office is not staffed.
