Serangoon MRT Station is an underground station on the Circle Line in Singapore. The station is located in the Serangoon Central area, at the intersection of Upper Serangoon Road and Serangoon Central. This station sees relatively heavy usage during peak periods, because a number of bus services which used to go to the city area now terminate at Serangoon Bus Interchange instead.
Serangoon serves the Nex area and nearby community amenities and several housing blocks nearby. These include their trips in November 2010, December 2010, March 2011, October 2011, December 2011, November 2012 and June 2014.
Short distances to Fragrant Gardens and Lorong Chuan are not listed as it is nearer to the vicinity.
History[]
In preliminary plans for the North East line (NEL) in 1986, it was planned for the line to serve the Serangoon area while it went along Serangoon Road and Upper Serangoon Road. Due to the lack of financial viability for the line at the time, it was only in 1995 that the government approved to construct the line "immediately".
Serangoon station was among the 16 NEL stations announced by communications minister Mah Bow Tan in March 1996. The contract for the construction of Serangoon station, and 2.5 km (1.6 mi) of bored tunnels, was awarded to a joint venture consisting of Wayss & Freytag Ag, Econ Corporation and Chew Eu Hock Construction Co Ltd. The S$317 million contract (US$315 million in 2020) included the construction of the adjacent Woodleigh station and the vehicular viaduct along Upper Serangoon Road. The station commenced services on 20 June 2003.
To facilitate the station's construction, the Paya Lebar Methodist Church and Braddell Heights Community Club has to be relocated. The Paya Lebar Methodist Church was moved to 5 Boundary Road and Braddell Heights CC, was shifted to Serangoon Avenue 3 junction. As part of the redevelopment project of Serangoon town centre, the area was designated for commercial developments which can only be constructed and opened after both the North East Line and Circle Line was completed. While taking over a few public facilities, new carpark lots and basketball court was being built.
While diverting Upper Serangoon Road for the construction works, the road capacity was maintained with adjacent road reserve spaces. The scope of the project is to built the Upper Serangoon Viaduct and they have to be carefully scheduled to take into account the various technical aspects of each part of the project. The tunnels were bored first, followed by the completion of the station's roof slab. Once the slab is finished, the pillars for the road viaduct could then be installed above ground.
To address the residents' complaints about the construction noises, through the area's grassroots leaders, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) explained the work progress and assured the residents that the inconvenience was temporary, with promises of better convenience with the completion of the MRT station. The works also involve the monitoring of the residential buildings, due to the proximity of the works to the surrounding structures. This ensured that the building's foundations were not affected.
The artwork in the Circle Line side is called View of Life by Sarkasi Said. The author used 18 original batik paintings on cloth which were photographed and printed onto a sheet of glass.
Circle Line[]
Serangoon was first announced in September 1999 to interchange with the proposed LRT line that goes from Buona Vista, via Bishan, Serangoon and towards Paya Lebar. Provisions were made for the existing NEL station to link with the future Circle line (CCL) platforms. In January 2003, the LTA announced that Serangoon CCL station would be constructed as part of CCL Stage 3 (CCL3). The 5.7-kilometre (3.5 mi) segment consists of five stations from the Bartley and Marymount stations, and was expected to be completed by early 2008. The contract for the construction of the CCL station was awarded to a joint venture of Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co (Singapore) Pte Ltd, Woh Hup and Alpine Mayreder. The S$155.95 million contract (US$90 million) included the construction of 3.8 kilometres (2.4 mi) bored tunnels.
Due to the build up of pressure while boring the CCL tunnels, white foam appeared at the junction of Serangoon Avenue 2 and Serangoon Avenue 3, leading to the temporary closure of 1 lane at the junction in February 2005. Tunnelling works was suspended to ease the pressure build up. During the excavation for the tunnels underneath the NEL station later that month, the contractors encountered a large amount of groundwater that seeped into the work site. This led to ground settlement and the sinking of the NEL station by one centimetre (0.39 in). Excavation works were suspended, while water had to be pumped out. As a precautionary measure, NEL trains nearing the station had to slow down when arriving or departing from the station. A new tunnel design was implemented, with new construction methods such as jet grouting and more comprehensive monitoring system to detect settlements to the NEL tunnels and viaduct.
The Circle Line portion of the station opened on 28 May 2009.[1] This is the second station in the MRT system after Dhoby Ghaut to have a travelator within the paid-area of the station. An integrated development, consisting of the nex shopping mall and a Serangoon Bus Interchange, is built on the site directly above the Circle Line part of this station.[2][3]
Platforms[]
All platforms are served by a set of escalators, stairs and lifts which connect to the concourse and transfer linkway above. While both platforms are indicated as Basement 2, the Circle Line runs underneath the North East Line.
Concourse[]
Circle Line concourse exists at Basement 1. They feature faregates for automatic fare collection and also one bi-directional swing gate for the benefit of passengers-in-wheelchairs and travelling with prams.
SMRT Staff Impersonator at Circle Line Passenger Services Office[]
An individual known as Nathanael Tan can be spotted stationed at the Circle Line Passenger Services Office everyday from 6.30pm till when the last train has left the station. He is also known to shout the phrase "PUNGGOL LAST TRAIN!" when the last Punggol Bound North East Line Train is arriving. SMRT has been made aware of his actions of impersonating SMRT Staff and it is believed that the individual was given warnings such as not wearing uniform impersonating SMRT's and the publication of a social media post guiding the public on how to identify a legitimate SMRT staff member.
