Dr. Lee Boon Yang (Template:Zh; born 1 October 1947) is a former Singaporean politician. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he served in the Cabinet from July 1991 to April 2009 in various portfolios, including Minister for Defence, Minister for Manpower, and Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts. He was also a Member of Parliament (MP) for Jalan Besar GRC from 1984 to 2011.

Political career[]

Lee was first elected to the Singapore Parliament in 1984. He was appointed a Parliamentary Secretary in 1985, and went on to hold positions in the Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Communications and Information, Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of Home Affairs.

Lee was brought into the Cabinet in 1991 as a Minister in the Prime Minister's Office. He was made Minister for Labour in 1992 (the role was renamed Minister for Manpower in 1998), and held this post until 2003. He also served concurrently as Minister for Defence from 1994-5. He became Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts in 2003 and served in that post until 2009.

'The implementation of the Next Generation National Broadband Network is also a project which gives me great satisfaction,' he added. 'This is a very major investment with powerful catalytic impact on the economy and society.'

On the difficult moments, he cited raising the retirement age from 55 to 62 as one when he was the Manpower Minister, as it entailed making adjustment to CPF contribution.

'Having to cut CPF in the aftermath of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis was not easy. Fortunately for Singapore and for me as the Minister-in-charge, the union leaders were always forward looking and pragmatic,' he said. 'It took many sessions with unionists but we were able to win their support and confidence for moves which helped Singapore to make adjustment for an ageing society and reposition for economic recovery.'

Lee retired from the Cabinet on 1 April 2009. He remained a Member of Parliament for the Jalan Besar Group Representation Constituency (Jalan Besar GRC) until his retirement from politics in 2011.

Post-political career[]

Lee is the Chairman of Keppel Corporation. He is also the Chairman of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH).

Personal life[]

Lee holds a Bachelor of Veterinary Science from the University of Queensland. He is married to Yap Mee Mee and has a daughter.
