High capacity buses are a collective group of buses that provide greater capacity, either through having more seats or standees, to accommodate more commuters, in comparison to rigid single-deck buses.

High capacity buses are utilized in public bus networks worldwide to improve operational efficiency by ferrying more passengers per trip, eliminating the need to deploy multiple rigid single-deck buses on heavily utilized bus services. The operation of these buses reduces the operational and manpower costs for bus operators with the usage of lesser buses and more effective utilization of bus drivers across bus networks.

Currently, two types of high capacity buses are operated in Singapore - double decker buses or articulated buses (known as bendy buses).

Since 1977, high capacity buses have been operated by public bus operators in Singapore to cater to bus services with high passenger demands by providing more capacity with more seats or standing space. The deployment of such buses also helps to optimise limited manpower and fleet operated on heavily utilised bus services.

Double Decker Buses[]

Double-decker buses are the oldest and most common type of high capacity buses that are operated by public bus operators in Singapore. They consist of two levels (or decks) - the upper deck and the lower deck. With 55 additional seats on the upper deck (for the modern air-conditioned double deckers), they provide capacity through the availability of more seats in comparison to rigid buses. However, standing is prohibited on the upper deck due to safety reasons.

Double-deck buses were first introduced by the Singapore Bus Service (SBS) in 1977, operating on now defunct Bus Service 86 between Hougang New Town and Shenton Way. Additional capacity is provided through more seating on the upper deck in comparison to single-deck buses. However, standing is not allowed on the upper deck due to safety reasons.

With the introduction of air-conditioned double-deck buses since 1993, the overall capacity for double-deck buses have increased with more seats fitted on their upper decks. Previously, the total capacity on non-air-conditioned double-deck buses are comparable with that of air-conditioned single-deck buses due to the shorter lengths of non-air-conditioned double-deck buses than standard rigid buses.

Bendy buses[]

Bendy bus is the second most common type of high capacity buses that are operated by public bus operators in Singapore. They consist of front trailer and rear trailer. There are 25 additional seats.

Bendy buses were first introduced by the Trans-Island Bus Service (TIBS) in 1996 on Bus Service 171. Additional capacity is provided through more seating and standing space in its trailer section. The first generation of Mercedes-Benz O405G buses introduced in 1997 had a higher overall capacity than air-conditioned double-deck buses operating at the time.

In 1998 and 1999 respectively, 2 articulated demonstrator units, registered as SBS998Y and SBS999U were operated by SBS/SBS Transit on Bus Services 18, 195 and 290. Both units were subsequently exported overseas in 2006, as double-deck buses were deemed more suitable for SBS Transit bus services after the trial periods of both articulated buses. However, articulated buses made a recurrence under SBS Transit in 2018, when 10 units of the MAN NG363F articulated buses were transferred to the operator under the Seletar Bus Package. All articulated buses under SBS Transit are restricted to operate on feeder bus services within Yishun only.
