KOI The HarbourFront Centre

HarbourFront Centre (Chinese: 港湾中心) is a shopping mall and ferry terminal that connects to nearby Indonesian ports and city (Batam and Bintan Island). It is at 1 Maritime Square, Telok Blangah in the Bukit Merah Planning Area, Singapore. The mall is part of a development known as HarbourFront which is connected to VivoCity, the country's largest shopping mall. Formerly known as the World Trade Centre (Chinese: 世界贸易中心), it was given its present name in 2003 and the mall was refurbished.

HarbourFront Centre is directly connected to HarbourFront MRT station of the Mass Rapid Transit and the Singapore Cruise Centre is in the building. HarbourFront Bus Interchange is directly opposite Telok Blangah Road. Towards the west of HarbourFront Centre are HarbourFront Tower 1, HarbourFront Tower 2 and Keppel Bay Tower; all are office buildings. The Sentosa Cable Car station is housed in HarbourFront Tower 2. All buildings are connected to HarbourFront Centre.

When HarbourFront Centre was known as World Trade Centre, it featured exhibition halls. These halls have since been demolished, and major exhibitions now take place at the Singapore Expo and Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre. Presently VivoCity occupies the land where the exhibition halls used to be.

History[]

Plans of building the World Trade Centre was first announced by the Port of Singapore Authority in 1973. It was officially opened in 1977, as well as having a ferry terminal that has traveling routes to nearby Indonesian ports, as well as the city of Batam and Bintan Island, it also featured nearby Expo Gateway and Harbour Pavilion exhibition halls.

The World Trade Centre hosted Miss Universe Pageant in 1987.

The World Trade Centre was later renovated from January 2000 with a connection to HarbourFront MRT station, and was reopened as HarbourFront Centre on 17 February 2003.
