Esplanade MRT Station is an underground Mass Rapid Transit station on the Circle Line in Singapore. The station was opened on 17 April 2010 along with the rest of Stage 1 & 2 of the Circle Line. It is located next to the War Memorial Park, the Suntec City Mall and the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The station also has a link to Raffles City, CityLink Mall, Suntec City Mall and Marina Square.
There is a link from Circle Line's Esplanade station to City Hall via the underground shopping centre CityLink Mall or the basement of Raffles City shopping mall.
History[]
The station was first announced as Convention Centre in November 1999 as part of the Marina Line (MRL). The MRL consisted of six stations from Dhoby Ghaut to Stadium. In 2001, the station became part of the Circle Line (CCL) Stage 1 when the MRL was incorporated into the CCL. On 7 August 2001, the LTA has awarded Contract 825 for the design and construction of the Convention Centre station and the associated tunnels to a joint venture under Shanghai Tunnel Engineering, Woh Hup Pte Ltd and NCC International AB. The $343 million contract included the construction of Dhoby Ghaut, Bras Basah and Promenade stations.
During the station's construction, the arterial roads along Bras Basah Road and Nicoll Highway were diverted across 10 phases. Road diversions began from 4 August 2002 with the realignment of the Bras Basah Road and the shifting of Nicoll Highway to War Memorial Park. A pedestrian underpass linking CityLink Mall and Suntec City was closed from 20 January 2003, and was replaced by a temporary covered pedestrian bridge to facilitate movement between Suntec City and CityLink Mall. The underpass from One Raffles Link to War Memorial Park was closed on 24 April 2002.
To minimise the impact of the noise and dust pollution from surrounding developments, the station was constructed using the top-down method. Diaphragm walls was being built to minimise ground movement. With the roof constructed first, construction can proceed under all weather conditions while allowing the early reinstatement of Bras Basah Road and War Memorial Park in preparation for the IMF World Bank Meeting in 2006. From the end of 2007, the diverted roads have been reinstated into the original alignments.
On 30 April 2008, the underpass was reopened to the public. It is the first of the Circle Line stations where the public can have a glimpse of the interior. Commuters heading from Marina Square, will no longer be able to cross the overhead bridge as it is dismantled on 12 May 2008. Instead, underpasses were built so that they do not need to see the traffic.
Station details[]
Esplanade is under the Circle Line and also between Bras Basah and Promenade stations. Esplanade is within the walking distance to City Hall on the North South and East West lines, linked by the CityLink Mall.
As the name suggests, the station is located near to Esplanade Theatres. It was originally named Convention Centre, Esplanade garnered more votes as 49% against War Memorial or Suntec at 41%. It was renamed to Esplanade after public poll in 2005.
In addition to Esplanade, the three-level station is connected to various developments within the Bras Basah Road, Raffles Boulevard and Nicoll Highway. Surrounding cultural landmarks such as War Memorial Park, Raffles Hotel and Padang, while the station serves retail and commercial buildings such as Marina Square, Raffles City, Suntec City and South Beach.
Architecture[]
An artwork by the late Lim Mu Hue, titled A Piece of Ice-Clear Heart, is located on a large wall within the walkway within the station between Raffles City and Marina Square. This black and white artwork features shadow puppetry and other performances enjoyed by the early settlers of Singapore. Consisting of a set of seven pieces of wood block prints depicting various aspects of theatre, the artwork is a collage of early and later works by Lim Mu Hue who died soon after completing this commission.[1]
Concourse[]
There are two separate ticket concourses at Basement 2, each at either end of the station. Both feature faregates for automatic fare collection and provides access between paid and unpaid areas of the station, with at least one bidirectional wide-swinging gate for the benefit of passengers-in-wheelchairs and those carrying bulky items or travelling with prams.
One floor above the concourse, the Transfer Level (B1) is occupied by Esplanade Xchange, which contains retail shops spanning the length of the station. All exits span out from this floor, and underground exits connect this floor with surrounding developments, such as Raffles City, Marina Square and South Beach (under construction as of March 2016).
Esplanade has an abandoned platform but with a small western concourse that is linked to the future Holland Line, which passes through South Beach area, but because the Holland Line was not built so it was abandoned.
iExperience Gallery[]
iExperience Gallery is a gallery that showcases infocomm experience in Singapore, where it evolves with the OpenNet. Its location is at Esplanade MRT Station. It also encompasses Smart Nation as Smart Mobility, Timothy Mok had went on 21 January 2014.
