It has almost 1200 stores in 12 countries and employs 17,000 staff in Australia and internationally.

Cotton On also operates Cotton On Body, Cotton On Kids, Rubi Shoes, Typo, T-bar and Factorie and owns Supré.

History

Cotton On was founded in 1991, with the first store being opened in Geelong, Australia. As of 2013, the Cotton On chain has over 1000 stores worldwide. As of 2011 the company employed around 5,500 people.

The company was established by Nigel Austin in Geelong, Australia, at the time it only sold women's clothing. Since January 2006, it had expanded with Cotton On Body and Cotton On Kids in 2007. It expanded to Typo (stationery and gifts), and also Rubi Shoes in February 2008.

The design team in the company's Australian office controls the steps of production from merchandise planning to establishing specifications, and production is outsourced to approximately 150 factories in Europe and Asia. These facilities are used for horizontal division of labor rather than being integrated.

After the collapse of the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh in April 2013, Cotton On, along with other major Australian retailers, became the focus of a campaign by Oxfam Australia to get the company to sign the Bangladesh Fire and Safety Accord.

In 2013, Cotton On acquired Australian fast-fashion brand Supré and plans to expand the brand internationally.

Cotton On hired Australian TV personality Lara Bingle to be the spokesperson of their One launch, which offered comfortable cotton basic shirts offered in a variety of necklines including V-neck, scoop and crew. Lara Bingle has also designed swimwear for the Australian Brand under their Body label.

Brands

Cotton On

Cotton On is the main brand of the Cotton On Group. It dates its origins back to Nigel Austin's first denim jacket sale in 1988. The first Cotton On branded store opened three years later.

Cotton On Kids

Cotton On Kids was launched in 2004, selling children's clothing, baby clothing, activewear, dress-ups, fashion accessories, swimwear, gifts, shoes and stationery. In March 2013 it launched a Free by Cotton On range for 9 to 14-year-olds. Free by Cotton On has since been discontinued and was replaced by Cotton On Kids Youth in 2020 which, instead of being an entirely separate range to Cotton On Kids, now offers the same Cotton On Kids items to customers in larger sizes (up to a size 16 in Girls and 20 in Boys).

Cotton On Body

Cotton On Body was launched in 2007, selling underwear and sleepwear. It later expanded into swimwear and activewear.

Factorie

Factorie is a youth fashion brand which was added to the Cotton On Group in 2007. It has since expanded internationally, and now has more than 160 stores across Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Rubi

Rubi is a footwear and accessories brand launched in 2008.

Typo

Typo is a stationery brand with stores in Australia, Asia, New Zealand, the United States, the UK and South Africa. In the UK, ASOS and WHSmith also stock select Typo products.

Supré

Supré was established in 1984, selling clothing for young women. It became part of the Cotton On Group in 2013, and had more than 1,000 workers across more than 100 retail stores in Australia and New Zealand at its peak. All Supré stores in NZ had been closed by 2020.

Lost

Cotton On Lost was launched in late 2018, but has since been phased out. The range included travel luggage and accessories.

Ceres Life

Ceres Life was launched in April 2020. What started out as an R&D project, it has now cemented itself as Cotton On Group's eighth brand which is aimed at 30yo+ women with a major focus on environment and sustainability, where all items in the range are sourced from responsible fabrics including recycled materials, rescued fabrics and organically grown textiles as well as eco-certified or natural fibres.

Cotton On has stores worldwide, in countries including Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Greece and Hong Kong.

Dwindling Stores in COVID-19 pandemic

On 25 June 2020, Rubi Junction 8 was closed down and replaced by BOVE by Spring Maternity, before being replaced by Urban Republic.

On 23 May 2021, Rubi Jurong Point was closed down and replaced by Cotton On Body, then it was replaced by Home's Harmony. Google Maps updated in July 2021.

On 27 July 2021, Rubi Compass One was closed down and replaced by Genki Sushi. Google Maps only updated in November 2021.

On 15 September 2021, Rubi Causeway Point was closed down and replaced by G2000. Google Maps only updated in November 2021.

On 27 November 2021, Rubi Great World City was closed down and replaced by Cotton On Body, lasted for a short time before being replaced by Bath & Body Works from 13 July 2022. Google Maps only updated in February 2022.

On 15 March 2022, Rubi Jewel Changi Airport was closed down for renovation work. Google stated "Temporary closed".

On 26 April 2022, Rubi Bedok Mall was closed down. It was being replaced by Typo after 2-3 weeks of renovation. Google Maps also updated on 7 May 2022. Typo was indirectly replaced by KIMOJ; whereas Charles & Keith was replaced by Paris Baguette.

On 13 August 2022, Rubi Tampines Mall was closed down with the merger into Cotton On Mega. Dwindling sales and loading pattern due to COVID-19 pandemic also had resulted in the closure of the store. On 1 September 2022, Google Maps was updated and it was replaced by New Era and Havaianas.

On 19 December 2022, Rubi Northpoint City was closed down. On 17 February 2023, Goldheart took over and Google Maps did not update until the early of March 2023.

On 22 February 2023, Rubi Westgate was closed down and on 21 March 2023, Rubi City Square Mall was closed down. Google Maps had not been updated until 30 May 2023 (Tuesday), a longer lag time. Westgate was replaced by Pop Mart (relocated), whereas City Square Mall was replaced by MOBOT.

Due to the AEI renovation works for ION Orchard, from 1 October 2023, Rubi ION Orchard was temporarily closed. The renovation for the space took 18 days for the Cotton On Body to reopen the outlet at that space.

Netherlands

Cotton On opened one store at Rotterdam on 15 February 2014.

China

Cotton On opened one megastore at Wenzhou on 19 June 2014, and at Sifang on 11 January 2015 which is under Rubi. Cotton On has plans to open various stores in China considering the high-speed railway chase in the past. Cotton On also opened one at Guangzhou on 5 June 2015. Other outlets are Zhuhai, Zhuzhou, Beijing, Quanzhou, Shenyang, Shanghai, Anhui, Beijing and Chengdu.

Rubi also has opened one at Wuhan, but closed temporarily due to the pandemic on January 2020 - April 2020.

Italy

Cotton On opened one megastore at Savigliano on 10 February 2011. Most stores sell Rubi Interstellar 1.0 trainer sports shoes.

Germany

Cotton On had 41 stores in Germany, which started there in 2011, but in 2015 all stores were closed. The stores were in:

Controversy

In December 2012 Cotton On was fined $1 million for selling highly flammable children's sleepwear misleadingly labelled as low fire danger. The discount clothing retailer, which has more than 900 outlets across the country, was fined $400,000 for selling more than 1000 nightdresses that breached Australian fire safety standards, and a further $400,000 for selling more than 1000 unsafe pairs of girls' pyjamas, between September and December 2010. It was fined a further $200,000 for false and misleading labels on both sets of clothing items which claimed they were low fire danger.
