On 2 March 2020, the outbreak began to spread with the first few cases, which is only at the local side in Indonesia.

The Indonesian government plans to turn a site on Galang Island, previously used as a refugee camp for Vietnamese asylum seekers into a 1,000-bed medical facility specially equipped to handle the coronavirus outbreak and other infectious diseases.

On 14 March, the government of Indonesia declared the coronavirus outbreak in Indonesia as a national disaster.

On 15 March, Joko Widodo has called on all Indonesians to practice what epidemiologists call social distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the country. Indonesian tax authorities announced that they will move back the tax reporting deadline to 30 April 2020.

On 16 March, Indonesian ministry of state owned enterprises have instructed its employees aged 50 upwards to work at home. President Joko Widodo also clarified that the decision to implement lockdown on cities or regencies are not in the hand of regency or provincial government, but on the hand of central government. On the same day, as schools are closing in some regions, Indonesian Education Minister Nadiem Makarim announced readiness of the Minister of Education to assist schools in online learning by providing free teaching platforms. Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani announced a shifting of infrastructure budget of 1 trillion IDR into healthcare and pandemic prevention. On 17 March, COVID-19 health protocols have been released to public. Ministry of Foreign Affairs are also expanded the travel restriction to include visitors who have been in Iran, Italy, Vatican City, Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland, and United Kingdom for the last 14 days followed by worldwide ban.

On 18 March, The Ministry of Finance also announced that Wisma Atlet Kemayoran which has 10 towers and 7426 unit. Its a building block built formerly to house athletes during Asian Games 2018, it will be used to house COVID-19 patients that are asymptomatic.

On 19 March, Bank of Indonesia decided to slash the bank rate to 4.5%, in addition to 6 other fiscal policies, in the attempt to shore up the economy amidst the COVID-19 crisis.

On 23 March, the former Asian Games athletes village was turned into an emergency COVID-19 hospital. The government will start using 2,400 rooms in two of the village's 10 towers to treat and isolate COVID-19 patients and suspected patients.

State of emergency was started on 24 March and Indonesia International Motor Show 2020 will be postponed due to the coronavirus crisis. President Joko Widodo announced the cancellation of the annual national examination (Ujian Nasional) for all education levels, vehicle loans were relaxed.

Indonesian Wikipedia gathering (along with other Indonesian languages edition, such as Javanese Wikipedia, Sundanese Wikipedia, Minangkabau Wikipedia, etc.) called "WikiNusantara" (similar to Wikimania but on national scale) scheduled at the end of March is cancelled.

On 26 March, 40 tonnes of medical equipment from China transported to Jakarta; and following day, Beringharjo and Tanah Abang (10 days) markets are closed to prevent COVID-19.

On 27 March, the government is mulling over a plan to ban this year's Idul Fitri mudik (exodus) to prevent city dwellers from spreading the coronavirus to towns and villages across the archipelago.
