Aljunied MRT Station is an above-ground Mass Rapid Transit station on the East West Line in Singapore. It serves the urban neighbourhood of Aljunied. Its livery is blue. It is named after the Aljunied Road, this station primarily serves Aljunied, one of the subzones that make up the Geylang planning area. Aljunied is the nearest MRT station to the Geylang East Town Centre. Despite its name, this station is not located in Aljunied GRC, but rather in MacPherson SMC.
History[]
On 26 June 2009, train services along the East West Line were disrupted for almost 18 minutes at about 7.25 pm after a man jumped off the platform and ran towards Paya Lebar. However, SMRT staff did not manage to find the man. The Chinese man in his 40s found his way down the tracks to the street but was later arrested by the police. He sustained leg injuries and was charged with attempted suicide.
In view of one incident over the years, half height platform screen doors were operational on 11 February 2011, and this station was installed with Rite Hite Revolution High Volume, Low Speed (HVLS) fans and began operating on 27 July 2012. This station was upgraded with TITAN faregates in 30 November 2013. Cash top ups are no longer accepted at Passenger Service Centre from 1 September 2017.
Concourse[]
The station has a ticket concourse located at ground level. It features faregates for automatic fare collection and provides access between paid and unpaid areas of the station, with at least least one bidirectional wide-swinging gate for the benefit of passengers-in-wheelchairs and those carrying bulky items or travelling with prams.
Aljunied MRT Station has fitted with TITAN faregates since 11 November 2013.
The station has lifts that connect platform level to the ticket concourse level below.
